Carrier Review

Primerica Life Insurance Review (2026): An Honest Look

Primerica is a real, licensed life insurance company, not a scam. It sells term life through a multi-level marketing sales force, publishes no rates online, and requires an agent quote. If a Primerica rep quoted you a policy, compare that price against 25 or more carriers before you sign.

Disclosure: Asurgo is an independent life insurance brokerage. We do not sell Primerica policies and receive no compensation from Primerica. This review is based on publicly available information. Asurgo is compensated by the carriers we represent when a policy is issued.

The Verdict

3.0 out of 5
Asurgo's Verdict: 3.0 / 5

Licensed and financially strong term life insurer with an A+ AM Best rating. The trade-offs are an MLM sales model, no published rates, no online quotes, and a customer-review record well below the financial-strength scores.

The Company

What Is Primerica?

Primerica is a public company whose insurance arm, Primerica Life Insurance Company, sells term life through independent reps. It's both a licensed, regulated insurer and a multi-level marketing (MLM) company. MLM means its reps can earn money two ways: by selling policies and by recruiting new reps whose sales they get a cut of.

Primerica sells only term life. No whole life. No universal life. No permanent coverage at all. The company's pitch is "buy term and invest the difference," which means buy the cheaper term policy and put the savings into investments. Primerica also sells investment products, but this review covers only the life insurance side.

Primerica Life is based in Duluth, Georgia and domiciled in Tennessee. The parent company, Primerica, Inc., trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker PRI. The company's roots go back to A.L. Williams & Associates, founded in 1977.

Primerica doesn't publish rates online. You can't get a quote from its website. The only way to see a Primerica price is through a rep. That's the key fact for the rest of this review.

Asurgo doesn't sell Primerica, so this review has no commission behind it in either direction.

The Big Question

Is Primerica a Pyramid Scheme?

Legally, no. Primerica is not a pyramid scheme. It's a state-licensed insurer that sells a real product, term life, through an MLM sales force. Here's what that means for the policy you were quoted.

The Legal Difference, Plainly

A pyramid scheme pays people mainly for recruiting, with no real product changing hands. That's illegal. Primerica sells a real, regulated product. Its policies are contracts backed by state law. If you buy a Primerica term policy, you own a real insurance contract that pays your beneficiary if you die during the term.

You can check this yourself. Primerica Life is licensed in your state. Look it up through the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (its home-state regulator) or the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) company lookup. A company that isn't real can't hold these licenses.

What the MLM Structure Means for Your Policy

Here's what matters if you were quoted a policy. The person who quoted you may be new to insurance. Primerica had about 152,600 licensed reps as of mid-2025. In Q2 2025 alone, the company brought in 80,924 new recruits but only 12,903 earned a license. That gap points to high turnover. The company's own income disclosure puts the 2025 average at $8,199 per rep and calls that figure "not typical of the sales force."

Commissions flow up a recruiting chain. That's a cost of the MLM model, just like ad spending is a cost for direct-to-consumer companies. None of that changes whether your policy is valid. What it does change: the rep who quoted you can only sell Primerica. You got one company's price from someone who can't show you the rest of the market. That's the key fact for a buyer, and the reason to compare.

If you were pitched on joining Primerica rather than buying from it, read the company's own income disclosure before deciding.

Ratings

Why Do Primerica's Ratings Look So Different?

Primerica scores high with financial reviewers and low with customers because the two groups rate different things: the company's ability to pay claims versus the experience of buying and holding a policy.

Why the High Scores Are Earned

NerdWallet rates Primerica 4.5 out of 5. AM Best, the insurance industry's main financial rater, gives Primerica Life an A+ (Superior) grade, affirmed in February 2026. That grade measures the company's ability to pay claims. Primerica has earned it. Long track record. Simple term-only product line. Strong finances. It's one of the highest-rated term insurers in the country.

Why the Low Scores Are Also Earned

Trustpilot shows Primerica at 2.4 out of 5, rated "Poor." The Better Business Bureau (BBB) shows 243 complaints in the last three years. Complaints cluster around product issues, service problems, and billing. Term coverage sold through a commissioned MLM sales force tends to cost more than the same product from carriers that compete on published rates. That pricing gap, plus varying rep quality, drives most of the low scores.

What This Means for You

Both scores are real. A company can be rock-solid and still be the pricier option with a rougher service record. The NAIC complaint index is the neutral check. It measures whether a company draws more or fewer complaints than you'd expect for its size. A score of 1.00 is the middle. Look up Primerica's current index at naic.org and judge for yourself.

Pricing

How Much Does Primerica Life Insurance Cost?

Primerica doesn't publish rates online and doesn't offer online quotes. The only way to learn the price is to sit with a rep. Here's what the same term coverage costs from carriers that do publish rates.

Why You Can't Find Primerica's Rates

There's no rate page on primerica.com and no quote tool. Some carriers only sell through agents, and that's Primerica's model. It isn't odd on its own. But a price you can't see is a price you can't compare, unless someone else puts the numbers on the table. That's what this table does.

Rates are for illustration only. Your actual premium depends on your health, gender, tobacco use, state, and carrier. Not all carriers are available in all states. "Best available" is the lowest starting rate across Asurgo's full carrier panel. See our 2026 term life rates by age chart for detailed pricing at every age.

How to Use This Table

The Primerica quote in your hand is one company's price. A broker quotes 25 or more carriers and shows where the same person gets the same coverage for less, or more coverage for the same money. The only way to know if the Primerica price is fair is to see what the rest of the market charges.

Cancellation

Is It Hard to Cancel Primerica Life Insurance?

You can cancel a Primerica term policy at any time by writing to the company and stopping your payments. Term policies have no surrender fees because there's no cash value to give up.

Most states offer a free-look period after you buy a new policy. This window is usually 10 to 30 days. It lets you cancel for a full refund if you change your mind. Check your policy papers for the exact window in your state.

One warning that applies to any policy, not just Primerica: never cancel before your new coverage is in force. If you're switching, the new policy comes first. A gap in coverage is the real risk. A cancellation you can't undo is worse than one extra month of premiums.

Cash Value

Can You Cash Out a Primerica Policy?

No. Primerica sells term life, and term policies have no cash value to withdraw or borrow against. Cash value is a whole life and universal life feature, not term.

This isn't a Primerica flaw. It's how all term works, and it's why term costs less per dollar of coverage. You're paying for pure protection over a set period, not building a savings account inside the policy. Primerica is upfront about selling term only.

If someone told you the policy builds value you can take out later, re-read the policy papers. A term contract doesn't do that. For more on how term works, see our term life insurance guide.

The Record

Primerica Complaints, Financial Strength, and the Record

Primerica holds strong financial ratings, and its complaint record is public. You can check both through the NAIC and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Financial Strength

AM Best rates Primerica Life A+ (Superior). That grade measures the company's ability to pay claims. It was last affirmed in February 2026 with a stable outlook. This is one of the highest grades a life insurer can earn. Check the current rating at ambest.com.

NAIC Complaint Index

The NAIC complaint index compares how many complaints a company gets to what you'd expect for its size. A score of 1.00 is the middle. Below 1.00 means fewer complaints than expected. Above 1.00 means more. Look up Primerica Life on the NAIC site to see the current index.

BBB Profile

The BBB gives Primerica an A+ rating and shows 243 complaints filed in the last three years, with 70 in the last 12 months. The top types are product issues, service issues, billing, and sales. Read complaint volume against company size. Primerica has roughly 150,000 licensed reps and millions of policies in force, so the raw count alone doesn't tell the whole story. The BBB record is public and free to check.

Who It's For

Who Primerica Fits, and Who Should Compare First

Primerica can work for someone who wants term coverage and values buying from a rep they know. Most other shoppers get the same coverage for less by comparing carriers that publish their rates.

Strengths

  • Licensed and regulated. Primerica Life is a state-licensed insurer. Check it through the NAIC and your state's DOI.
  • A+ (Superior) AM Best rating. One of the strongest grades in the industry.
  • Term-only lineup. Term is the right product for most families. The buy-term stance steers buyers away from pricey permanent products.
  • Long history. Roots going back to 1977. Decades of paying claims.

Weaknesses

  • No published rates, no online quotes. You can't see the price without meeting a rep.
  • MLM sales model. Your rep can only quote Primerica. One company's price, no market context.
  • Varying rep experience. In Q2 2025, 80,924 recruits entered but only 12,903 got licensed. High turnover means your rep may be new to insurance.
  • Low customer scores. 2.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot. 243 BBB complaints in three years.

May Be a Fit

  • You want term coverage (the right instinct), got a written quote, compared it against at least two other carriers, and found Primerica competitive for your health class.

Should Compare First

  • You haven't seen a second quote from another carrier.
  • Your rep is a friend or family member. Get an outside number before mixing money and relationships.
  • You were quoted a premium that strained the budget. Another carrier may offer the same coverage for less.
  • You found this page by searching whether Primerica is a pyramid scheme. If you have questions about the company, compare before you commit.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Primerica a legit life insurance?

Yes. Primerica Life Insurance Company is a state-licensed insurer domiciled in Tennessee with an A+ (Superior) rating from AM Best. It sells real term life policies backed by state insurance law. You can verify its license through the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance or the NAIC. Legitimacy and best value are two different questions, so compare before you buy.

How much is Primerica life insurance per month?

Primerica does not publish rates online, and you can't get a quote without sitting down with a rep. That makes it hard to compare. Through Asurgo, a healthy 30-year-old woman can get a 20-year, $250,000 term policy starting at $14.62 a month from carriers that do publish rates. See our term life rates chart for pricing at every age.

Is it hard to cancel Primerica life insurance?

No. You can cancel a Primerica term policy at any time by contacting the company in writing and stopping your premium payments. Term policies have no surrender fees. Most states also offer a free-look period after purchase where you can cancel for a full refund. Never cancel an existing policy before replacement coverage is in force.

What does Dave Ramsey say about Primerica?

Dave Ramsey is well known for recommending term life insurance over whole life, which lines up with Primerica's buy-term philosophy. However, Ramsey does not endorse Primerica and has publicly said their costs are high. His general advice is to buy affordable term coverage and invest the savings, which is easier to follow when you compare rates from multiple carriers.

What is the downside of Primerica?

The main downsides are no published rates and no online quotes, so you can't comparison shop on your own. Primerica reps can only sell Primerica, which means one company's price with no market context. Customer reviews on Trustpilot average 2.4 out of 5. The BBB shows 243 complaints in three years, with product, service, and billing issues as the top themes.

Can I cash out my Primerica life insurance?

No. Primerica sells term life insurance, and term policies have no cash value to withdraw or borrow against. Cash value is a feature of whole life and universal life policies. This is not a Primerica flaw. It is how all term insurance works, and it is why term costs less per dollar of coverage.
